Why Become a LIFT OFF Student Volunteer?
Volunteering with LIFT OFF is rewarding and fun. It gives you the chance to meet new people, develop skills and interests and give something back to the community.
LIFT OFF student volunteers are essential members of our team! School pupils really engage with students, who are able to make the world of college or university come to life for them. Not only are students positive role models, but their input also allows us to increase the numbers of sessions we run and the scope of the overall project.
A Student's Perspective
Iona is a LIFT OFF Student Volunteer and a student at the University of St Andrews. We asked her to give us her thoughts on the LIFT OFF Student Volunteer programme.
'Volunteering with LIFT OFF has so many benefits for the student volunteer. Not only do you get a firsthand insight into what it’s like to be a pupil who has all the important decisions still to make, but you become part of helping the pupil make one of those decisions. This in itself is rewarding. There’s also the sense of satisfaction when you see pupils take the path that you introduced them too and talked them through taking. It’s also satisfying being able to use the knowledge and experience that you’ve built up from being a student to help someone else get to where they want to be.
There are benefits of having students involved for the pupil too. Having student volunteers present means that there is then the opportunity for the pupil to ask questions directly to the student volunteer about anything related to life as a student. Also, it often happens that there is a student volunteer in the position that one of the pupils is working towards. This gives them inspiration and the realisation that their goal is achievable. Having students involved makes the LIFT OFF experience more practical and more fun for both parties!'
