Hi, I’m a Social Anthropology student at the University of St Andrews and to repeat what I say in pretty much every LIFT OFF workshop and event I attend - "Don’t worry if you have no idea what that is, no one ever does!". I have been volunteering with LIFT OFF since my first year of university after meeting some of the team at a volunteer fayre.
I started working with LIFT OFF for several reasons. I wanted to get involved with something outside university, gain experience working with
young people and promote my love of higher education. After a few weeks working with them I knew I had made the right decision. Stepping into your first workshop may be a bit daunting, but with the LIFT OFF team there to support you the nerves disappear and you get really into it. After doing a few workshops you begin to feel like you could stand up and talk to anyone. The great thing about being a student volunteer is you really feel you can be of use to the pupils you are working with, they want to know about college and university, and hey - for most of us that is our biggest area of expertise. It is also fantastic to see the pupils really getting into the idea of further and higher education, especially the ones who before LIFT OFF didn’t really know it was an option.
You become a student volunteer for the experience, for the CV enhancing aspect, but you will stick with LIFT OFF for the team, the laughs, the pupils and for that feeling that you are really doing something worthwhile.
